The party met by sheer destiny. The Snoring Warrior Tavern has a few odd things about it. First off, it gets its name because there is something about the place that gives the customers a sense of calm as soon as you enter the door. This has caused many a road-weary traveler to fall asleep at their table. Marteph Stoneharrow will tell you that it’s his proprietary blend of essential oils. The second odd thing is there is always an empty seat, no matter how crowded it is. This night, Destiny itself would decide where to open seats for our party.
Jack Dagger had been watching newcomers as they arrived, looking to recruit some to handle tasks for his boss Aemon Cobb. Aemon had tasked him to put this group together and take them to the merchants and see if they needed anything the group could do. Every seat in the house was filled because Marteph Stoneharrow|Marteph was going to tell the final chapter of a group of locals that went north for a funeral and ended up defeating the Red Dragon Army. In this story another local, Rowan Hearthwell, who traveled up to fight in the war a few months back, saved Darret Highwater but sacrificed his own life doing so.
As each of our party entered, though, there was an available seat for them. A table with only two seats appears when Bimmi and Brynnan enter. Shortly after, a young warlock named Titus walked through the door and, without anyone noticing, the two-person table now had room and a spot for three. When Vonmese gets there, once again that two-person table not only had room and a seat for three but an empty chair just for him.
Marteph begins his tale with a short recap of the previous chapters up until now, for the newcomers to his story night. Then he talks for an hour and a half, telling about the Guardians of Greenspire bringing down a flying citadel made on the bones of dead dragons. Finally getting to the part where Rowan jumps in front of a blow intended to kill Darret. This gave Darret the opportunity to thrust his blade up into the commander’s heart and kill her. After that the Red Dragon Army ran away.
Sir Jangle Merrigold begins visiting tables, begging for tips, and as Jack sees that everyone he was recruiting had somehow found their way to the same table all at once, he decided this was the time to recruit them. He offers to take them on a tour of Eastguard and tells them he has been noticing them around town and thought they could be useful if they were wanting to earn a little coin. The hour is getting late, so Jack shows them back to the Inn and says he will meet them in the morning for the tour.
Morning comes, and in the lobby Teti Stoneharrow is serving coffee and Jack is there as promised.
The party went on the tour of Eastguard. They started the tour at the northern end of Main St. and worked their way south, visiting the shops along the way and being introduced to many of the merchants, ending up at Bindings and Whispers. Brittany had a job that needed handling.
Tour of Eastguard
The group started on Crafter’s Road, directly across from the inn.
Stops included:
-
Stonehide Leatherworks
-
An art and gem shop selling jewelry, artwork, paints, and supplies
-
Bree’s Brews & Bread, which sells baked goods and beer (the only ale in town is served at the Snoring Warrior)
From there the group returned to Main Street.
Jack brought them into Aemon’s Curiosities and Pawn, where they met Aemon Cobb.
After leaving Aemon’s shop, Jack pointed out several nearby locations:
-
Eastguard Public Library next door
-
Dera’s Apothecary across the street
-
Carpenter’s Woodworking
-
The Mad Sphinx, a one-room dive bar on the corner of Scholarly Way
The group then visited Walden’s Wand Shop, where Brynnan spent extra time looking around.
Next door stood A Stitch in Time, a tailoring shop run by Garrick.
Finally the group entered Brittany’s Bindings & Whispers, the town’s bookshop.
The Quest
Inside Bindings & Whispers the party met Brittany Marginsong, who asked them to retrieve Retrieve Rowan’s Journal from his parents. She wanted the journal for research.
The party assumed they might need to steal it and began figuring out how to find Rowan’s home.
Bemmi went to Town Hall and spoke with a clerk named Kyle. After some persuasion Kyle checked the records and gave directions to Rowan’s parents’ house:
Follow the creek north out of town and keep it on the left until reaching the house.
Rowan’s Parents
When the party arrived, Bemmi spoke with Rowan’s mother and asked about the journal. She was hesitant to give it up. Bemmi tried several approaches but failed to persuade her. One attempt rolled a natural one, which angered her enough that she slammed the door in his face.
Bemmi apologized and offered her calming gummies meant to help with grief. She accepted and spoke with him again, but the conversation went poorly and she slammed the door a second time.
Meanwhile Brynnan used Find Familiar, turning the familiar into a lizard and sending it inside the house to search. The familiar found the room containing Rowan’s journal.
Brynnan then went around the house to the window and used Mage Hand to open it and pull the journal outside.
The party left with the book.
The Lie
On the way back to town Brynnan read the journal. It contained personal notes but nothing dangerous or secret.
When Bemmi asked if Brynnan had stolen it, Brynnan lied and said he had not.
Bemmi’s mechanical parrot Blackjack, which can detect lies a limited number of times per day, immediately shouted:
“LIAR. LIAR.”
Returning the Journal
The party returned to Bindings & Whispers and gave Brittany the journal. She paid them for retrieving it.
Later Brittany summoned Jack privately.
She had carefully cleaned and preserved the journal, applying a treatment that would prevent it from decaying further. She then gave it back to Jack and asked him to return it to Rowan’s mother.
Jack returned to the house and left the book on the doorstep. He fired a blunted arrow at the door as a knock before leaving.
The Consequence
Rowan’s mother knew exactly when the journal disappeared.
She had been speaking to Bemmi at the door when it happened.
As far as she could tell:
-
Bemmi distracted her
-
Brynnan stole the journal
-
Jack was with them
Word spread through town that the group had stolen the book from a grieving mother.
When Brittany and Aemon Cobb heard what happened, they were furious.
Brittany does not steal, and the rumor that people associated with her robbed a grieving family damaged her reputation.
Aemon demanded to know what kind of people Jack had brought into his town.
That is where the session ended.
