Eastguard Public Library
The Eastguard Public Library stands at the northwest corner where Scholarly Way meets Main Street. The building sits catty-corner to the streets around it, its pale marble walls catching the light differently through the day than the timber shops that surround it. To the north along Main Street sits Aemon’s Curiosities and Pawn. Along Scholarly Way to the west, the gardens and quiet grounds of Brittany’s Bindings & Whispers begin.
The structure itself is unmistakable. The building is a broad square of polished marble raised on a slightly elevated foundation. A flight of wide marble steps climbs from the street to a portico of tall columns that frame a pair of heavy metal double doors. The doors are worked with delicate relief patterns depicting scrollwork, open books, and stylized lanterns.
Above the roofline rises the library’s most distinctive feature: a glass dome set into the flat marble roof at the center of the building. The dome catches sunlight during the day and glows faintly at night when lanterns burn inside the reading hall below.
Each exterior wall bears a statue set into a shallow alcove. Though time and weather have softened some details, the symbolism remains clear. One figure holds a sword, representing the defense of knowledge. Another carries an open book, symbolizing learning. A third holds a lantern raised forward as if guiding travelers through darkness. The final figure carries a bowl, a quiet symbol of wisdom shared freely.
Inside, the library opens into a wide reading hall directly beneath the glass dome. Sunlight pours down through the dome and shifts slowly across the marble floor through the day. Long wooden tables sit beneath the light, usually occupied by scholars, merchants studying charts, or travelers trying to decipher old maps.
Tall shelves line the outer walls, filled with scrolls, ledgers, local histories, and copied works brought by travelers passing through the harbor. The air inside carries the smell of paper, lamp oil, and polished wood. Unlike the busier streets outside, voices here stay low and footsteps softer.
The library is one of the few places in Eastguard where the noise of trade fades into something quieter and more thoughtful.
