Grandfather Frostbeard

A Beloved Winter Legend of Eastguard

Among the people of Eastguard, few stories are as comforting as the tales of Grandfather Frostbeard. According to locals, he is a kindly old dwarf who wanders the roads during the coldest months, wrapped in a heavy red cloak with a beard as white as new snow. Children say he carries a pack filled with small gifts and carved toys. Adults claim he carries something even better, a keg of fine winter brew meant to warm cold travelers.

No one agrees whether he is real or just a story told around the hearth, but everyone knows the legend.

Grandfather Frostbeard is said to visit lonely outposts, snowed in farmsteads, and remote guard posts, bringing cheer, warmth, and a reminder that no one is forgotten in the long night of winter. He never stays long. One moment he is there with a booming laugh, and the next he has vanished down the road in a swirl of snow and wind.

Dwarves insist he was once a wandering hearth-priest or a famous brewer from the mountains. Humans say he was a traveling hero who retired into myth. Kender claim he personally taught them how to whistle in tune with the winter wind.

In Eastguard, folks will sometimes say a person has “the spirit of Frostbeard” if they greet others with warmth or laughter.

And if you ever step into the Snoring Warrior Tavern and notice the owner’s loud welcome, bright smile, and booming laugh, you may hear someone whisper:

“Marteph has a bit of Grandfather Frostbeard in him.”
