The Party
Welcome to Eastguard
Date: Feb 25th, 2026
Summary
The tale began in darkness and fire. Marteth, the barkeeper and storyteller, recounted the final, desperate moments of the siege of Kalaman — a battle that had already cost so much. The citadel had broken apart and fallen, crushing draconians by the dozens and sending death dragons crashing from the sky like bones from a butcher’s table. For one breathless moment, it seemed as though the war might finally be over. But war never ends that cleanly.
A red streak cut across the smoke. It was Ignea, a fearsome dragon, and atop her rode Dragon Highlord Kinsaldi Fire-eyes, her fire eyes burning with cold judgment. She perched upon a shard of the fallen citadel and offered the survivors a choice: surrender or death. They chose neither. The field erupted into fire, stone rained from the sky, and the heroes emptied themselves of everything they had left — nothing held in reserve, only will. A warrior named Frosty climbed a jagged spire like it was a mountain he was born to conquer, and when the dragon staggered beneath him, he drove a Dragon Lance straight through Ignea’s eye. The great beast fell hard.
But Kinsaldi Fire-eyes was not finished. She leapt from the dying dragon’s back and came for Darrett with murderous intent, trading blow for blow until Darrett was running on fumes. When her strike finally landed, Darrett fell to his knees. She raised her pike for the killing blow — and that was when Rowan moved. Rowan Harthwell, a farm boy from Eastguard, did not think. He simply threw himself between Kinsaldi Fire-eyes’s pike and Derek, and the weapon meant for Darrett went through Rowan instead. He made a sound, Marteth said, like someone surprised the world could hurt that much. In the same breath, Darrett drove his sword up under Kinsaldi Fire-eyes’s armor and through her heart. She was dead before she hit the dirt.
Ignatius ran to Rowan’s side, but he had spent every last measure of his healing power and had nothing left to pull another soul back from the edge. Rowan was slipping. He looked up at Darrett and spoke the very words Darrett had once told him — that you don’t have to be brave every day, just be brave today. Then, with his last breath, he asked the question that would echo through the tavern long after Marteth raised his drink in a toast: “Was I brave today?” He was. The siege of Kalaman ended with a citadel broken, a dragon slain, a high master dead, and a farm boy from Eastguard who stood when he didn’t have to.
As the toast settled and the story faded into the warm noise of The Snoring Warrior Tavern, the patrons began to stir — and it was only then that a handful of strangers realized they had all ended up at the same table. Brynnan and Bimmi Brewfett had arrived first, taking the only two available seats. Titus had walked in next and found one seat remaining at their table. Vonmese Tunmiar followed, and then Sir Jangle Merrigold, a bard with a pencil-thin mustache who had been playing his harmonica before the story began. Finally, a hooded figure who had been watching from the corner all evening stepped forward and asked if he might sit. His name was Jack Dagger, and he had been watching them all along. Jack bought the first round, and the six of them talked long into the night, with Jack eventually offering to show the newcomers around Eastguard come morning.
Morning arrived at the Inn of the Broken Blade, where Teti Stoneharrow — innkeeper and sister of Marteth — served the bleary-eyed group steaming mugs of dark coffee and breakfast on the house. Bimmi chewed his way through some restorative juicy fruit to shake off the previous night, and once the group had gathered their wits, Jack led them out into the streets of Eastguard. He walked them down Crafter’s Row with the easy confidence of someone who had made himself at home in every corner of the town. They visited the Twinforge Smithy, where the Iron Hand twins Brynya and Borin worked — Brynya crafting weapons and intricate decorative work, Borin handling armor. Sir Jangle asked for a cleaning cloth for his harmonica and was directed down the road to Stonehide Leatherworks, where the proprietor Garrett sold him a simple chamois for a single copper piece. Titus picked up a bundle of arrows, and Bimmi acquired a set of leatherworking tools, both at a generous discount thanks to Jack’s easy charm with the locals.
The tour continued to Aemon’s Curiosities and Pawn, a remarkable shop owned by a retired adventurer named Aemon Cobb. The interior was lined with glass display cases filled with neatly arranged oddities, a wall of every weapon imaginable stretched across the back, and a grand clockwork cash register sat at the counter with a satisfying mechanical ring. Bimmi, ever the tinkerer, offered to improve the register — and promptly made it completely silent, much to Aemon’s visible dismay. The group also spotted a mechanical rabbit that hopped across the counter, and Jack quietly acquired a set of lockpicking tools before they moved on.
Jack led the group past Dera’s Apothecary — run by a distrustful gnome woman who eyed Bimmi’s gummy potions with deep suspicion — and past the woodworking shop of Cody Carpenter, the library, the rough dive bar known as the Mad Sphinx, and Walden’s Wands, where Brynnan examined the proprietor’s collection of magical wands with great interest. The tour wound back through the smithy for tools before Jack brought them to the last stop: a small, quaint bookshop called Binding and Whispers. The exterior was modest, but stepping through the door revealed an interior far larger than the outside walls should have allowed, and more than one member of the group swore they saw books shifting on the shelves of their own accord.
Behind the counter stood Brittany Marginsong, the shop’s keeper, who greeted Jack warmly and wasted little time in presenting the group with a task. She explained that the late hero Rowan Harthwell had kept a personal journal, and she believed it was still at his family’s farmhouse north of town. She wanted to study it — to understand what had driven a simple farm boy to march off to war and ultimately give his life. She could not leave the shop herself, and the task, she admitted, would require someone with a silver tongue. The group agreed to help.
Getting directions proved its own small adventure. Bimmi visited City Hall and charmed the clerk Kyle so thoroughly that the young man went above and beyond, digging through records to produce detailed directions to the Hearthwell farm near a creek north of town. Bimmi rewarded him with a few silver pieces, and the group set off — Bimmi, Brynnan, and Jack making the hour-long walk while the others remained in town. The farmhouse was a modest, single-story ranch with flower beds at the front door, a beehive in the yard, and a wheelbarrow resting against the side wall. It looked like a place where grief had settled in and made itself comfortable.
Brynnan sent his lizard familiar slipping under the gap of a bedroom door while Bimmi knocked at the front and spoke with Lady Hearthwell, offering heartfelt condolences and explaining that a keeper of books wished to borrow the journal to honor her son’s memory. Lady Hearthwell was overcome with grief and refused, even as Bimmi offered her calming gummies from Solace to ease her nerves — she took them, but still shut the door. Meanwhile, Brynnan had located the leather-bound journal on a desk inside the bedroom. Using a spectral hand conjured through the window, he silently lifted the book and brought it outside without the family ever noticing. The group walked away at a measured, unhurried pace — until Bimmi’s bird companion, Blackjack, squawked loudly and exposed Brynnan’s lie about not having seen the journal, nearly unraveling the whole affair as they tried to casually disappear down the road.
Once safely away, Brynnan read through the journal. Its entries were those of a young man finding his voice — notes about chores, visits to the tavern, names of people he’d met, and two mentions of Marteth’s stories about the great heroes of the age. On the last page, the writing simply trailed off mid-thought, as though Rowan had set the pen down to go plow the field and never came back to finish. Brynnan carefully copied the important passages onto his own parchment before the group returned to Brittany, who accepted the journal and later returned it to them cleaned, preserved, and wrapped in cloth, asking that it be returned to the Hearthwells. Jack went alone to the farmhouse, left the book on the doorstep with a note of explanation, and knocked by firing a blunt, tipless arrow against the door before retreating into the treeline. The journal found its way home, the group collected their gold, and the streets of Eastguard settled into the quiet of another evening — though something about the way these six strangers had fallen together suggested that their story was only just beginning.
Short
The session opened with Marteth, the barkeeper, recounting the climactic end of the siege of Kalaman. After the citadel fell and crushed the enemy forces, the fearsome dragon Ignea and her rider, High Master Kensaldi, descended to demand surrender. The heroes refused, and a brutal battle followed. A warrior named Frosty scaled a jagged spire and drove a Dragon Lance through Ignea’s eye, slaying the beast. Kensaldi then turned on Derek, nearly killing him — until Rowan Harthwell, a farm boy from Eastguard, threw himself in front of the killing blow. Mortally wounded, Rowan echoed Derek’s own words back to him about bravery, asked with his dying breath whether he had been brave that day, and passed away as Derek slew Kensaldi. The siege ended with a dragon dead, a high master fallen, and a farm boy remembered as a hero.
As the story faded, six strangers — Brynnan, Bimmi Brewfett, Titus, Vonmese Tunmiar, Sir Jangle Merrigold, and the mysterious Jack Dagger — found themselves sharing a table at the tavern. Jack took the lead the next morning, guiding the group on a tour of Eastguard and introducing them to its merchants and landmarks. Their adventures culminated at Binding and Whispers, a peculiar bookshop whose interior defied its modest exterior, where keeper Brittany Marginsong tasked them with retrieving Rowan Harthwell’s personal journal from his family’s farmhouse. The group retrieved the journal through a combination of charm and subtle deception, with Brynnan using a spectral hand to lift it unnoticed while Bimmi distracted Lady Hearthwell. After Brynnan copied its poignant entries — the simple musings of a young man who never returned to finish his last thought — the journal was preserved and quietly returned to the Hearthwell doorstep by Jack. The group collected their reward, and as Eastguard settled into evening, it was clear that these six strangers had only just begun their story together.
Classic
Last we left off, our unlikely band of strangers found themselves drawn together by the warmth of a tavern fire and the weight of a story well told. In The Snoring Warrior Tavern, the barkeeper Marteth wove the tale of the siege of Kalaman — of dragons felled by Dragon Lances, of a High Master struck down in the dirt, and of a farm boy named Rowan Harthwell who threw himself between death and a friend without a moment’s hesitation. His final words — “Was I brave today?” — hung in the air long after the toast was raised, and it was in that shared silence that six strangers found themselves seated at the same table. Brynnan, Bimmi, Titus, Vonmese, Sir Jangle, and the watchful, hooded Jack Dagger shared a round, shared a night, and by morning had become something resembling a company.
Jack led them through the streets of Eastguard with the ease of a man who belongs everywhere and nowhere at once — past the Twinforge Smithy, through Stonehide Leatherworks, into the remarkable depths of Aemon’s Curiosities, and finally to a small bookshop called Binding and Whispers, whose interior was considerably larger than any building had a right to be. There, the keeper Brittany Marginsong set before them a task as simple as it was delicate: retrieve the personal journal of Rowan Harthwell from his family’s farmhouse north of town. What followed was a careful dance of condolences, conjured spectral hands, a well-meaning lizard familiar, and one very poorly timed squawk from Bimmi’s bird companion, Blackjack, that nearly unraveled the entire affair. The journal was recovered, copied, preserved, and quietly returned to the Hearthwell doorstep by way of a blunt arrow and a note — as dignified an ending as the circumstances allowed.
Now, with gold in hand, a copied page of a dead hero’s final thoughts, and the streets of Eastguard growing quiet around them, these six find themselves at the beginning of something they cannot yet name. The town is peaceful — for now — but peace in a place like this has a way of being temporary. And something about the way fate keeps nudging these particular souls together suggests that Eastguard may only be the first chapter. And so, we pick up as our party settles in for the evening, wondering what morning will ask of them next…
Middle English
Lythe and listin, good folk all, To tales of war and flame, Of Kalaman’s great citadel’s fall, And heroes’ deeds of fame. When Ignea came with fire and dread, And Kensaldi rode on high, Our champions fought with hearts of lead, And made the dragon die.
But Rowan Harthwell, farm boy true, Did throw himself between, The pike that would have run Derek through— The bravest ever seen. He fell upon that blood-stained ground, With question on his lips: “Was I brave today?” the fateful sound, As death came to his lips.
In Eastguard’s tavern, by fortune’s hand, Six strangers came to meet, Jack Dagger, Jangle, Titus grand, And Bimmi, Brynnan sweet. They walked the streets with Jack as guide, Through smithy, shop, and store, Till Brittany’s shop, so deep and wide, Did open up its door.
A task was set, a journal lost, At Hearthwell’s farmstead fair, Young Rowan’s words, though death had crossed, Were waiting waiting there. With cunning words and spectral hand, They took what they had sought, And brought the book back to the land, Where Rowan’s life was fought.
The journal home did find its way, Upon the doorstep laid, And six new friends, come what may, Had forged a bond that stayed. In Eastguard’s streets, their tale begins, Of strangers bound as one, Where every heart and soul within, Knows battles to be won.
Snarky
Six strangers walked into a tavern and accidentally became a found family, which is either the most clichéd beginning to an adventure or proof that Marteth’s storytelling has some kind of magical recruitment power. After being emotionally devastated by the tale of Rowan Harthwell — a farm boy who died being braver than any of them will probably ever be — our motley crew of Brynnan, Bimmi, Titus, Vonmese, Sir Jangle (a bard with a pencil-thin mustache, because of course), and the suspiciously well-connected Jack Dagger decided the logical next step was to go on a guided tour of Eastguard and spend money at every shop on the street. Jack’s charm got them discounts everywhere, Bimmi “improved” a clockwork cash register into complete silence, and somehow a mechanical rabbit was involved. A perfectly normal morning.
Then Brittany Marginsong — keeper of a bookshop that is definitely bigger on the inside than the outside and has books that move by themselves, which nobody addressed nearly enough — asked the group to retrieve Rowan’s personal journal from his grieving mother. What followed was a masterclass in chaotic good decision-making: Bimmi offered the bereaved woman calming gummies, got the door shut in his face, while Brynnan used a spectral hand to silently steal the journal through a window like a very literary ghost. They walked away at a suspiciously casual pace, right up until Bimmi’s bird companion, Blackjack, loudly betrayed them to no one in particular. The journal was eventually copied, preserved, returned via blunt arrow delivery to the Hearthwell doorstep, and the group collected their gold — which is a sentence that should not work as well as it does, and yet here we are.
Limerick
In Kalaman, fire and ruin held sway, A citadel crumbled and dragons gave way. Frosty climbed high, Lance pierced dragon’s eye, And Rowan fell brave at the end of the day!
Kensaldi struck hard, Derek fell to his knees, But Rowan stepped forward with death-defying ease. He took the pike’s blow, Let his last question go: “Was I brave today?” — Yes, by all the gods, please!
Six strangers found seats at the tale’s dying breath, Jack Dagger watched all from the shadows of death. He bought the first round, On common ground found, And promised to guide them come morning beneath!
Jack toured them through Eastguard with confident grace, From Twinforge to Aemon’s remarkable place. Bimmi silenced the till, (Against Aemon’s will), And lockpicks slipped into Jack’s pocket with haste!
