Summary

Late at night, Sir Jangle Merrigold felt his bardic mark humming and overheating, and slipped off alone to the College to investigate. The campus was mostly quiet, but the Library was open. His research turned up the Bard King — a lost god of bards, performers, and minstrels, once pictured in the night sky by a harp before vanishing in the Cataclysm. Turning his search toward his own harmonica’s odd behavior, he found a reference book with an image of a beautiful woman who matched someone he’d met before, and the picture struck him enough to ask about borrowing the book. The Librarian balked at first — no membership on file — but a bit of valuable collateral changed her mind, and he left with the book in hand.

Back at the Rose, the Sword and the Crown, the rest of the party turned in for the night. Come morning, Bimmi Juffett Thunderhammer treated everyone to breakfast, tipped generously, and after tasting the food offered a few improvements — a little salt, some chives, better use of the bacon grease. The innkeeper was wary until a sample won her over, and Bimmi spent a couple of hours in the kitchen teaching the cook, Oars, leaving behind notes so the lessons would stick. Jack Dagger spent the morning hunting for better armor, got pointed toward a superior armorer, and passed the recommendation to Titus, who came away with sturdier gear of his own. Brynnan, meanwhile, buried himself in the city’s libraries and turned up a copy of Counterspell to study.

The group reconvened at a job board near the gate into the Old City. They skipped a more dangerous, better-paying posting in favor of a notice about goblins raiding Purple Ridge. Sir Jangle rejoined them (after also commissioning a same-day portrait at a gallery near the palace), and the group headed out while Brynnan stayed behind with his spellwork.

At Purple Ridge, they found goblins mid-raid — looting, smashing, hauling off goods. Jack Dagger suggested picking them off from a distance; Bimmi had other ideas, striding straight into the middle of them and issuing a challenge. When one goblin mocked him for it, he answered with a magical blast, then unleashed a guardian effect that tore through the raiders as they closed in, dropping most of the first wave outright. The survivors fled and screamed for backup — which arrived as a second wave, spellcasters and a larger goblin included. Jack Dagger and Titus each dropped a spellcaster, Bimmi waded back in against the larger goblin with his guardian effect still crackling, and Sir Jangle detonated a shattering burst that finished off several more and left Bimmi fighting with fresh inspiration. The last exchange got messy — melee goblins wounded Bimmi, a spellcaster blinded Jack Dagger — but Jack fought through it by feel, dropped his attacker, and once his sight came back, closed out the fight himself.

With the raiders dead, the party collected ears as proof, gathered the loot, and Bimmi carved strips of meat off one corpse, insisting he’d cook it later. Back at the Quest Giver’s shop, their contact was openly stunned the whole raiding party had been wiped out, paid the posted reward, and threw in a box of calming tea once he heard a friend of theirs was studying for a magical Test. The party split the rest of the take — silver, copper, trade goods, a healing potion, and a map — giving Bimmi the potion and the map for having taken the worst of it in the fight. He paid a gold piece for the tea anyway, just for the satisfaction of not taking it free. The group headed home, already planning to bring Brynnan his tea.

Short

A late-night library trip turns up a lost god called the Bard King and a familiar face in an old book, while the rest of the party handles breakfast diplomacy, armor shopping, and spell research back at the inn. A job board points everyone toward a goblin raid at Purple Ridge, which the party ends decisively — and gets paid in gold, loot, and a very specific box of calming tea for Brynnan’s coming Test.

Classic

Last time, Brittany finally opened up about her own origins on the way to Palanthas. This time, the party settled into the city — new armor, new spells, a night of library research that turned up an old, half-forgotten god — before taking a job that turned into a full goblin ambush. Two waves, a guardian effect that did most of the heavy lifting, and a Quest Giver who genuinely didn’t expect anyone to come back with all their targets dead.

Snarky

Sir Jangle spent his evening chasing a humming mark to a library and came back with a book, a god nobody’s worshipped since the Cataclysm, and a picture of a woman he’s suspiciously unwilling to name. Everyone else had a much calmer morning — breakfast, armor shopping, a spellbook update — right up until the group took a job clearing goblins and Bimmi decided the correct opening move was walking directly into the middle of them and yelling. It worked. It always works. He even paid for the tea afterward, on principle.

Memorable Moments

Sir Jangle finds an old image of “a woman he’s met before” while researching a lost god — and doesn’t elaborate.

The book came home with him. The explanation didn’t.

Bimmi walks into a goblin raiding party, issues a challenge, and answers the first insult with a guardian effect that does the rest of the job for him.

Subtlety was discussed. Subtlety lost.

The Quest Giver is genuinely shocked the whole raiding party is dead — and throws in tea for a friend he’s never met.

Word travels fast, apparently. So does goodwill.

Scenes

A Humming Mark and an Old God

A late-night library trip turns up more questions than answers.

  • Sir Jangle followed his overheating, humming mark to the College at night.
  • Research into the mark’s behavior led him to the Bard King, a lost deity of music and inspiration.
  • A reference book held an image of a woman he recognized, striking him enough to ask to borrow it.
  • The Librarian refused at first, then agreed once he offered valuable collateral.

A Morning in Palanthas

Breakfast diplomacy, armor shopping, and spellbook work.

  • Bimmi won over the inn’s kitchen with a free lesson and left notes behind for the cook.
  • Jack Dagger found a superior armorer and passed the tip to Titus, who bought sturdier gear.
  • Brynnan spent the day in the libraries and located a copy of Counterspell.

The Purple Ridge Job

A goblin raid turns into a two-wave fight.

  • The party picked the Purple Ridge goblin job over a more dangerous, better-paying posting.
  • Bimmi challenged the raiders head-on and triggered a guardian effect that devastated the first wave.
  • A second wave brought spellcasters and a larger goblin; the party fought through blinding magic and wounds to finish the job.
  • The Quest Giver, surprised by the total wipe, paid out the bounty and added a box of calming tea for Brynnan.
