Echoes of Sunken Shadows
Date: May 13, 2026 — Session 7
Summary
At Sheltered Cove, Vonmese told the party she was choosing a life of piracy and left the crew. It’s the last anyone in the party has seen of her.
Three nights in a row. The same dream. Every member of the party woke gasping from water that wasn’t there — the sensation of being submerged, of something enormous reaching up from below. They compared notes in the morning and found the details matched too closely to dismiss as coincidence.
The days that followed were a slow sail along the coast with the dreams getting worse and the destination getting closer. They pulled into a stretch of Coastal Ruins instead of the port they’d expected — a former elven city levelled during the Kinslayer Wars, its streets now grass and rubble and the grazing land of a shepherd named Benny Broughet. He asked if they’d seen his sheep. They had not. They searched the ruins for magic and found nothing useful, everything long since picked over. That night the dreams came again, but with something new in them — a presence this time, vast and patient, that seemed to be taking their measure.
A three-masted ship flying a red, black, and white flag forced them ashore the next day. The party collapsed the folding boat and retreated to high ground, watching the vessel zigzag through the cove for the better part of an hour before it moved on. Back on the water, they found the marked spot on their chart and anchored above the ruins of Itzan Klertal.
Titus dove first and found the Bronze Book — a massive volume of brass plates bound on hooked rings — sitting on the seafloor thirty-five feet down, too heavy to lift by hand. Sir Jangle Merrigold threaded a rope through its bindings using Mage Hand. When the party hauled, the strain cracked the mast. Titus dove again, wrapped himself around the book, and used Misty Step to bring himself and the book to the deck in one violent impact. The book arrived. So did a fracture in the hull.
Bimmie and Titus drank their water-breathing potions and descended into the ruins together. They found walls, broken tables, a statue of Mishakal, lion-flanked entrances, and an obelisk covered in symbols none of them could read. Then two figures stepped out of the deeper dark. Humanoid. Aquatic. Before the party could attempt communication, one of them spoke — not with a voice, but directly into their minds.
“Dinner is served.”
Short
Three nights of shared drowning-dreams, a ruined elven city with a helpful shepherd and no useful magic, a pirate ship that forced an hour of hiding on a cliff, and a mast cracked by a brass book too heavy to lift by anything other than sheer recklessness. Titus retrieved the Bronze Book via Misty Step, the party dove into Itzan Klertal and found a statue of Mishakal and an unreadable obelisk — and then two aquatic creatures told them dinner was served. Session ended on that note.
Classic
Last we left off, the party had been dreaming the same dream for three nights running, and the sea had been getting stranger the closer they sailed. This session was the slow burn before the plunge — ruins, a shepherd looking for sheep, a pirate ship that cost them an hour of hiding, and a brass book that broke the mast on the way up. By the time Bimmie and Titus descended into Itzan Klertal in person, the tension had built long enough that “Dinner is served” landed like a stone in still water.
Snarky
The party had the same nightmare for three nights, sailed to an abandoned elven city, talked to a man about sheep he couldn’t find, found nothing magical because pirates had already looted everything, and then hid on a cliff for an hour watching a ship search for them. Then they cracked their mast hauling up a book nobody can read. Then they dove into the ruins and two fish-people told them they were dinner. The dreams were foreshadowing. Nobody slept well for a reason.
Limerick
The dreams kept on coming, the same every night, Of water and darkness and something not right. The elven ruins were bare, A shepherd stood there, “Seen my sheep?” — then a pirate ship came into sight!
They dove for the book, and the mast paid the price, Titus used Misty Step — once would suffice. They found the old hall, The statue, the wall — Two voices said “Dinner.” It wasn’t so nice.
Memorable Moments
Three party members compare their dreams in the morning and find the details are identical — submersion, pressure, and something reaching up from below.
What started as a coincidence became a pattern, and the pattern felt deliberate.
Titus wraps himself around a four-hundred-pound brass book on the seafloor and Misty Steps to the deck, landing hard enough to shake the boat.
It was either inspired or reckless. Both, probably.
Two aquatic figures step from the darkness of Itzan Klertal and speak directly into the party’s minds.
“Dinner is served.”
Communication confirmed. Intentions also confirmed.
Scenes
The Shared Dreams
The party compares notes and realizes they have been dreaming in unison.
- Every member woke with the same sensation — submersion, pressure, something vast below.
- The details matched too closely to dismiss.
- Bimmie prayed to Mishakal for guidance. No response came.
- The dreams returned each night, adding new detail: a giant squid, a sense of being weighed and measured.
The Coastal Ruins
The party arrives at a ruined elven city instead of a port.
- A shepherd named Benny Broughet emerged from the tall grass to ask if they’d seen his sheep.
- The ruins were identified as a former elven city destroyed during the Kinslayer Wars.
- The party searched for magical remnants. The site was thoroughly picked over. Nothing usable.
- The ruins feature an obelisk with unreadable symbols, scattered columns, and mercantile carvings.
- That night, the dreams returned — this time with a presence that seemed to be assessing them.
Forced Ashore
A large pirate vessel forces the party to hide and wait.
- A three-masted ship appeared flying a red, black, and white flag — a rogue nation associated with piracy.
- The party steered for shore, collapsed the folding boat, and retreated to high ground.
- The vessel zigzagged through the cove for roughly an hour before departing.
- The party descended from the cliff to retrieve the boat — Titus slipped, fell onto the deck, and injured himself.
- Sir Jangle Merrigold used magic to appear aboard safely.
Recovering the Bronze Book
The party anchors over Itzan Klertal and retrieves an artifact from the seafloor.
- Titus dove and found the Bronze Book — brass plates bound on hooked rings — thirty-five feet down.
- Too heavy to lift by hand. Sir Jangle Merrigold threaded a rope through the bindings with Mage Hand.
- Hauling the book via rope cracked the mast.
- Titus dove again, wrapped himself around the book, and Misty Stepped to the deck.
- The book arrived intact. The mast did not survive the process undamaged.
- The script inside was unreadable — elements of Common mixed with something unknown.
Into the Ruins
Bimmie and Titus descend into Itzan Klertal on water-breathing potions.
- They found walls, broken furniture, benches, and fountains.
- A statue of Mishakal stood in one chamber. Bimmie prayed. No response.
- An obelisk covered in strange unreadable symbols occupied a side room.
- Lion statues flanked one of the entrances.
- Two humanoid aquatic figures emerged from the deeper dark.
- One of them communicated telepathically: “Dinner is served.”
NPCs
Benny Broughet
A human shepherd tending sheep among the rubble of the coastal elven ruins. He asked the party about his sheep, explained the history of the site, and went about his day. The ruins are his pasture.
Locations
Coastal Ruins
A former elven city along the coast, destroyed during the Kinslayer Wars. Long since picked clean by looters. Grass and rubble. A shepherd and his sheep.
Itzan Klertal
A sunken city resting thirty-five feet below the surface of the New Sea. Walls, broken tables, a statue of Mishakal, lion-flanked entrances, an obelisk with unreadable symbols. And whatever lives in the deeper chambers.
Items
Bronze Book
A heavy volume of brass plates bound on hooked rings. Recovered from the seafloor of Itzan Klertal at considerable cost to the mast. The script is largely unreadable — fragments of something that resembles Common, mixed with an unknown language. Its significance is not yet clear.
